I'm up in lovely Eastport Maine right now, on a little family vacation for a couple weeks. My pal Pierre and his family are coming up this weekend and I'll be test shooting the new D200 system in some cold water. Pics to come! Stand by....:D

Well, I did my first dive with a digital camera. Attached are a few cold water critters for your amusement. The viz is crappy right now--less than 10 feet, probably due to the extreme tides we had with the full moon last week. So I stuck to macro. A lot of scuz in the water. However by careful strobe placement, the backscatter is not too bad. These are just downloaded from the camera, converted from raw and downsized. No photoshop tweaks other than a resize, levels and a tiny unsharp mask on the down-rezzed version. The colors are a little flat, I am new to this RAW file conversion thing. I'll get better as I learn the software!

Hmmm......I'm confused. Those should appear as images, not links. Clearly more troubleshooting on this site is required!

Let me try just posting a couple at a time....

I'm standing by for some technical help on the image display. There is supposed to be a setting in the software that allows you to tell it to display all images as pics not links. Can't find it. Hopefully will have this worked out soon.

OK, apparently I had the settings set right, but it just isn't working right. So I decided to try thumbnail functions instead.
What do you guys think? What is better, just having the full size images appear in the thread, or having the software create thumbnails which you can click and open in a new window? The thumbnails will be faster on dial-up connections, but slightly less convenient.

I prefer having the full-size images appear in the thread, but then I'm a lazy bastid!!

Jonathan - Welcome to Maine!! I look forward to the weekend and to meeting you next month in Eastport!
I'm trying to post some pic's to share with the group. I'm afraid the FAQ isn't much help to me. Is there another help source which is more complete??
Thanks!! Breeze

I'm leaning towards keeping the thumbnails. It makes the pages load faster for people on slower connections.
Breeze-See ya in Maine next month, it'll be a good time. Jean the wolffish is very cooperative!

Uhmmm . . . am I way ahead here, or is it just my imagination that "most" people who are into digital photography are sophisticated enough to have broadband?
Isn't dial-up going the way of film? ;)

I would have thought most people were on broadband, but apparently not. Especially in many other countries.
I was on dial-up for the past couple weeks on vacation in Maine, and let me tell you, it's a bummer once you are used to blazingly fast cable modems!

Have you seen the cost of broadband? How can I afford the latest camera toys if I'm spending my bucks on trinkets like broadband? And the cost of 12 months of broadband is much better spent on another dive adventure.
Ok, I admit, I do live in the sticks, but being surrounded by the freeways of San Diego makes one look for caves to live in. We're so backwards here in this part of Escondido, that we don't even have cable, nor DSL - we're too far out!
On a more serious note, even given the handicap of dial up, I'm not having any trouble downloading the pics - thumbnails or otherwise... so far. Perhaps this is because of the size restrictions that are recommended for posting. My system seems to be comfortable (meaning it doesn't take forever) downloading files up to 2 MB. After that it starts to take some time. I don't know what would happen if ten people submitted 1 MB photos at the same time. Would my system have to download all ten simultaneously or would it do them one at a time or only when I clicked on a thread?
I'd be happy to do some testing for you Jonathan if you want a pre-hsitoric dial-up guinea-pig.

Well, to revisit this ancient thread....
I'm up in Eastport this week. I am again back on dial-up here! The house is only used as a vacation home, so it makes no sense to have broadband here.
Anyway, I came up last weekend with Pierre to work on some Blue World segments. Pierre had to leave yesterday and now I have a couple days off to work on the house. Thursday I will be greeting a group for a dive weekend--always a lot of fun and work.
The water is 50 degrees. The viz is good...about 20 feet. I would say better than average but not abnormally good. Gene the wolffish has a new crop of eggs. I went down on the first dive to see if he was around. There was a larger wolffish in the hole next door, but he/she wouldn't come out to feed. Gene was in his normal den and wouldn't come out either, which is unusual for him. The only time he hasn't come out to be fed in 10 years was when he had eggs. So I peeked in there with a flashlight and he has another nest of eggs. I'll have to check the logs and see if it was the same time last year. So he won't leave his eggs when he is guarding them, but he will eat from my hand if I hold the whelk in the entrance to the den, which I did. He's my pal, what can I say--I don't want the big guy to starve. ;)
We found a massive (10 pound?) lobster that attacked Pierre's camera when cornered. Most lobsters run and hide, but the big ones up here have attitude. They kick butt instead of hiding.
Lots of soft coral, basket stars, etc. A wonderful place to dive!

Sounds like fun.
Hope Pierre's camera is Ok and that you got good shots of attack.

Hi Jukka,
No problem. The lobster attacked the port shade hood and held to it strongly. I had to shake him off and he finally let go went I was pulling him out in the blue.
I think it makes the sequence funny to see the lobster backing a bit then jumping to pinch the port and you can clearly hear the sounds of his big claws grabbing the port shade, me yelling in my regulator and fighting with my Phenom housing...
See you in Yap!
