Everyone likes cephalopods!! Post 'em if ya got 'em! Taking it a step further as Mark suggested in another thread, please list with the image as much technical information as you have.
This is a rare Arctic Octopus, photographed in Massachusetts, and there is a good story to this one, but I'll have to wait and tell you later. I am typing one-handed because I'm holding my son right now.

That Lembeh guy is cool!
That Lembeh guy is cool!
The first shot is how I found him/her. After a couple of shots, it picked up the coconut shell and held it up tight to its underside with 4 legs and kind of "ran" with its other 4. It was one of those times that you laugh through tour reg.

Here's a Carib reef out during the day. It dashed through a little hole in a coral head to hide from me. It didnt' seem to realize that the hole was much bigger on the other side of the coral head, so I just swam around and shot it from the other side. I thought these things were supposed to be smart! I have several goofy-looking images of this particular animal. Nikon N90s/Ikelite housing, 60mm behind flat port, dual Ike 100's, Provia f 100 film, f16 @1/250th -Clay

You can't do a signature per Jonathan's post in Miscellaneous +help :( . Which is too bad, as you could use it to designate the equipment used by the photographer....

That is a feature that will be available for subscribed users in the future for a small fee. I haven't gotten around to setting it up yet. The idea would be to help fund the site with these proceeds, as the site is entirely funded by my wallet right now! The other thing you would get for this fee is unlimited image hosting. (Right now there is a per person limit of 1 MB).

I call this one 'Sucker for Attention'.
Octopi are so amusing! I love watching all the various contortions they make and how they can change colors and textures right before your eyes.
They're each so different. Some are so shy you can't coax them out of their holes, while others are so playful and mischievious that you'd better watch out! I had one wrap his tentacles around my camera one time and it was a little bit of a struggle before he let go. I hate those bandit octopi!

Hunting for interesting and unusual creatures to photograph is one matter, while finding creatures that are cooperative and undaunted by your presence is quite another.
Learning how to take it slow and 'blend' with the surroundings does make it easier, but it's always nice to find a creature who plainly knows you're there and seems totally unbothered. R

It was about 1.5-2.0 cm in length... just a little baby squid. It was also night! Shot at F16 in the water column. Was basically happy to find it and focus on it in the water column as it kept trying to swim toward the focus light... Thanks for the kind comment.:D

Hi Clay
Thanks for the advise. I had a quick play in photoshop, but could not really get much improvment. Perhaps the image is just too under exposed? If I use lighten it does bring out a bit more detail, but the image looks very flat and dull. Same thing with the dodge tool. Any suggestions?

Andy: I've had a go at it with Elements 5. I really had to crank up the shadow detail in the shadows and highlights function of the enhance lighting menu. I increased shadow detail by 75, which is a far greater amount than I've ever used for one of my photos, but I think this shot is worth some effort. The extreme shadow crank seemed to cause some color temperature issues, so I also backed down the reds by 15. I think the white line down the pus's back is pretty cool. Here's the result from about a minute of work:

If the original is a RAW file from a digicam, you can do wonders with that image.

I am afraid the original is on ektachrome and then scanned. So there is no option to modify the exposure that way.

Not wanting to be critical but if it was me, I would gave just cropped out that piece of coral at the bottom of the picture as it distracts the eye from the main subject, just my opinion of course... Great picture though.

Andrew, critic is really what is needed in this thread.
There is many opinions about this dark background...its pleasing eye, but on the other hand it making the pic little unrealistic...all these were taken from same cuttle fish and same time of day and same apperature f10 and same shutter speed 80 and same Iso 100...I think that when we were circulating same coral the dark background was away from the sun and blue backgraund opposite. The dark background has been more darkened with photoshop in last one.
The one thing I like to have in pic is different levels and to me this piece of coral is giving one...maybe it would be better with little more of that...we have different opinions and yours is as good as mine:p
I have been always bad to evaluate my own pics and still am...my favourite is the first one...UW TANDOR!
