I just watched the aquarium episode and as much as I enjoyed it, I was also very sad watching it.
From seeing the whale sharks in the wild and the enjoyment of seeing one swimming free, it does not seem right to keep them in a tank... even one that size! I am not sure what area they cover in our oceans (and the depth they must dive) but I can only imagine it must be huge and of course there is not having to be trained to eat your food...
I wonder what effect this has to their growth rates and lifespans?
One day will we only see them in Aquariums or Zoos....

There is a point in your post. I have not clear opinion should all the aquariums be banned.
There are some points why my opinion is not clear:
- it would be much worse to one finding itself from the fin soup:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/sharks-piled-high-rows-of-fins-photos-reveal-breadth-of-killings-in-taiwan/2011/10/19/gIQAMflbxL_blog.html
- the people who are working with those just love them
- you have to think also that aquariums are needed for understanding the need of saving underwater creatures among those who are not diving
The best would be that they are free, but to reach the maximum result from the target " save the seas and their inhabitants " aquariums might be needed.

Jukka, I am not clear on it one way or another too. My son loves aquariums and I love to take him. I think it is just due to the size of these animals, whereas the smaller ones do not roam large areas whale sharks do or dive deep and also do you need 4 in one tank? I really do not know how much social interaction they have with other whalesharks?
True... They are better than shark fin soup, but I see loads of chinese in aquariums taking pictures but that does not stop their nation from eating their awful soup
Of course it must be a dream job looking after them but not a reason to keep them.
I remember a few years back it was in the paper about some of them dying after a couple of years, I cant remember which aquarium it was in, I think Japan?

This is a valid and common argument with dolphins in captivity too. Some say it's cruel and some say it's necessary to help people understand and care about these animals. In the USA, it is illegal to bring dolphins to aquaria that are captured in the wild because there are actually more captive dolphins being born every year than they can find homes for. As a result, all the dolphins in captivity unless they are very old, have been raised their whole lives in captivity and will not be able to survive in the wild. We actually did a season 3 segment on that too.

Continuing with the discussion on aquaria, this month's new segment shows a very positive effect of aquaria--rehabilitation of stranded animals.
Presenting: Sully The Pilot Whale (http://www.blueworldtv.com/s3_e03.html)!

Sea World is really happy with the segment. In fact, they are sending me some footage of Sully that is recent with him hanging out with the general public so I can do a little web-only feature to update his status.

When there is happy ending...there have to be story. I feel that this episode was mostly carried by the story...if I remember right Jonathan was not diving at all...that is not bad...only the thing I noticed.
Also like previous episode there was material timely from different points, which is giving much wider view to whole...audience love that...and that is also much more challenging to plan...if one have to shoot everything himself it is also much more expensive to produce.
To me this episode also took up the question to rather similar cases, where whale/whales have been found from the beach...dead or dying...can hearing be some sort of reason to those?

The Great Barrier Reef segment was kinda goofy and fun, but not one of my favorites of the season.
Sea Lions was pretty cool though.
