Oh, I feel so bad for you. Forced to dive in the Philippines. :( Probably in a world renound location too. Forced to be in nice warm water, say 80 degrees, with lovely corals and myriad critters surrounding you. :(

DO you need a camera assistant? :D

It's like I tell my wife....it's a tough job, but someone has to do it. :D

Unfortunately I already have an assistant for this gig, but actually the opportunity comes up a lot. Because my gigs are random and sporadic, I don't have enough work to pay someone full time. So I end up having friends assist. They all have real jobs which means they have to take vacation time to do it.

Unfortunately, there is rarely any budget to actually PAY assistants. Most assistants go unpaid, but may get a free trip out of the deal. But not always....sometimes they have to pay their own way as well. Nonetheless, it's a fun way to do something interesting on a vacation rather than be shuttled around by a cattle boat operator. (Working on films often gives me access and priviledges that the average diver doesn't get, as well as assistance from the tourism board to circumvent annoying beaurocracy.)

The film I was shooting in the Philippines last spring had a film crew of 9 including me to handle all the critters and gear. Six of them were "earthwatch-style" assistants, meaning they paid their own way and worked on the film to gain experience and have a "unique" kind of dive vacation where they got to do something a little different. ALL of them had a great time and loved it. They got to do things you just can't do on a normal dive trip. (I'm shooting the second half of that film this year and doing the same thing. Four of the 6 volunteers are the same people.)

Wasn't expecting a 'yes" answer... just bemoaning that you "have" to be in the Philippines, which is one of my absolute favorite places for diving anywhere. I was in Anilao last month for my 6th time there. I love it there :D

Where are you going this time???

PS My regular guide (best guide in all of Anilao) and boatmen in Anilao are fantastic if you need a photo friendly person. He is really the best!
