Straight forfard pictures are impressive. I think that one reason for that is that creature that way is communicating straight with audience. Off course it is not easy to get fish to look straight to camera.

Yes I am referring you Tarzy, your pics starts to be over magical level.
( your jawfish was even better than Jonathans, oops ).
And yes I am joining the second Dolphin Dream/ March
( having two days Finland after trip to Lempeh/Bunaken/Raja Ampat and continuing to west Palm Peach )
And yes we will have a great time there!
Jukka
Jukka . . . you are my new best friend!!! Thank you for the kudos!!
Better be careful with those "better-than-Jonathan's" compliments. You might be the first (and only) one to be charged admission to this board. ;)
I'm on the first AND second Tiger Shark trip, so I'll definitely be able to shoot a few sharks and hoist a few beers with you.
Holy Gigabytes!!! Jukka!! That is one helluva trip you have planned for March. You better bring along an extra hard dive to store all those images you're going to shoot!!

Okay . . . now THAT'S an interesting example of normally unwanted backscatter actually becoming an important part of the image.
When I first looked at Jukka's pic I thought "Whoa! How'd he get those stars in there?" Then I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and realized it was backscatter.

You are right its backscatter! Jonathan said in some thread that the conditions are what they are ( viz, storm, light etc ), you cant change them and you have to turn the circumstances to your advantage. Its not easy but you have to try!

Oh man, you guys CAN'T start taking things I say seriously! :D What will happen next? I'll start doling out some crappy advice and someone will actually take it.
But seriously, while I find a lot of backscatter quite annoying, and have been known on occasion to photoshop out a really annoying chunk  I also think that sometimes backscatter works. It helps "set" an image underwater. Look at Doubilet's stuff...he doesn't remove it. He has tons of great images with a little backscatter. Sure, often it is annoying. But sometimes it helps the image pop a little, and frankly, if it's there, it's there. Maybe I'm crazy, just my thoughts. But it depends on the shot. Some shots are just ruined by backscatter and that's all there is to it.
On this latest St. Vincent trip I had 20-30 foot viz in a location that is known for 100+ feet. What can you do? I was there, I needed to "get the shots" because I was working...so the answer is to figure out what kind of shots you can get in limited viz, and work the angles. I have to say, this is one case where digital REALLY helps because the instant feedback helps you figure out what is working and more importantly what is NOT working.
I'm going to give away one of my secrets (not that I invented it or anything)....in limited viz one of my tricks to create images that have zing is to backlight....which actually INCREASES the visibility of water-bourne particulates. But the effect you get is cool and it actually works BETTER in low viz. I am actually working on an article about backlighting right now.

I feel that when there is backscatter the object have to be even closer than close ( object have to be clear and sharp ) after which backscatter can be part of composition...not of coarse always!

The Jawfish was shot with a Canon 5D and a Canon 100mm macro. Believe it or not, the image was shot at 1/50th of a second  at f / 22 and at an ISO of 50.
Usually I have that shutter speed cranked up to maximum strobe sync speed in order to freeze action. This is expecially necessary for Jawfish who don't seem to sit still for anything (just like little kids). I don't know why I had the shutter speed so low. Maybe I was experimenting. I dunno.

Here's one in the spirit of Halloween--a leopard toadfish (they look like jack-o-lanterns to me) on the wreck of the so-called "Russian Freighter" (actually the San Pablo which sank in the early 1940's) near Pensacola, Florida. The fish was in a hole facing a current, so I had to approach it from behind to keep from being blown into it. I had to invert myself to frame the fish upside down, and I think the lighting from beneath sort of adds to the ghoulish look. Nikon D80, Nikon 60mm, Ike housing, ISO 100, f16@1/200, dual Ike 125 strobes on TTL.

Jukka: They spend their days in holes and ambush hunt for crustaceans and fish. I've seen one or two laying in the open on the bottom, but I've never gotten a photo of that. They're even weirder looking when you can see the whole fish! They're pretty common on Gulf of Mexico wreck dives of over 50' off the Florida panhandle, but I've never seen one anywhere else and they are officially listed as endangered. A very similar fish, the oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau), lives on the Atlantic side of Florida and up the coast to the mid-western Atlantic. I've never made a night dive off the Florida panhandle, so I don't know if they're more active at night (note to self: arrange a night dive on the Russian Freighter near Pensacola). -Clay
Edited to answer Jukka's question: They're fairly large--up to a foot or more in length. For more views see http://claycoleman.tripod.com/id397.htm

Pink anemone pic was taken during my last trip to Indonesia, Bunaken. I had ONLY 60 mm macro...I just got new sigma 105 mm, but not yet underwater...I have to buy also Ike flat port for that.

Hi Jukka
The angel was shot on f13 at 1/60 with ISO 160 using a 150mm lens. Yet another advantage of going digital - if you had asked me what f stop I was using back in the days of film, I would not have had a clue.
Here is another shot of the same fish.

Just some fabulous fish faces, everyone! What a fun thread!
That Arabian angelfish is gorgeous!
Here are a few from last month's trip to Bonaire:
My first frogfish face:

A spinyhead blenny:

And yet another not-a-fish face. Who knew fireworms even had faces?

I think the chinese dragon image may be modeled after fireworms...:)

This grouper got so close to my lens that when the strobes went off, they each illuminated only part of the fish. Made for an interesting effect. Just got my 2nd strobe so this was the first trip I was able to use it. Really makes a difference in lighting.
This picture is as shot with no post processing.

This Roughhead Blenny was just looking out of its hole when I happened by. They are so small, I was lucky I saw it. It looks like you can even see its teeth??? This was on the Turks & Caicos aggressor during the week of 17-24 May.
This image was cropped to single out the subject and sharpened a little bit.

Redkane how you are positioning the strobes with so small creature?

I put them on a parallel line with the lens port to each side and pointed slightly in towards the port. They are also fairly close. The distance from the leftmost outside side of the left strobe to the rightmost outside of the right strobe, through the lens port, is about 20-24 inches and pointed inwards towards what I am photographing.
Hope that's clear?

Thanks, but in almost 5000 dives I have never seen a Trumpet fish hang with a Lobster;) I had to look twice when I saw it and it moved wherever the Lobster moved!
