Nice shots, everybody! This is going to be a fun thread (welcome, Jani, and thanks for the idea). I like to look for natural frames for portraits. Here are some examples:

Or placing a diver in an interesting situation, as many of you have done:

I have to put this pool shot up although I've posted it before. I don't know this guy, and I'm not sure why this photo "gets" me so much, but his expression and attitude has a lot to do with it:

Jonathon, water temperature in the St. Lawrence River ranges from 33 in the winter to about 73 in the peak of the summer, as we come out of spring of the year we start stripping the cold water gear off, when the water usually hits 68 we go to the shorty, not all divers do this but I love the freedom of a shorty compared to a drysuit and a lot less weight and gear to lug around, then September rolls around and we reverse the procedures

The river tends to be quite a bit warmer than the lakes in general. There have been times I've been at 100ft+ in lake Ontario in the middle of summer only to have temperatures in the mid 30s.

On the finnish board thers always discussions whether one should do their ceertification in Finland or someplace warmer with nice vis. A lot of people think that its better to get certified in Finland, because the conditions (cold water with poor visibility) are more challenging and getting the training in 'aquarium' conditions might not prepare you for the harsh reality.
Anyway, I think diving in Finland is totally different than diving in south, but its also quite exciting. I enjoy it a lot.
Oh, and there is another point here too. If you get certified in Finland and go diving in warm waters with good vis you might easily start thinking its too easy and forget to follow your depth or something like that... Maybe. I didn't when I was diving Grenada, but it could happen...
I think I had some kind of an idea when I started typing, but I seem to have lost it.... :o

Solisti,
I agree that a diver trained and certified under poor conditions is easily able to adapt to clear water and unlimited visibility whereas a diver certified in ideal conditions is ill prepared to handle the cold water, increased exposure protection including hood and gloves, the extra weight required, as well as the limited visibility. We have the world's best fresh water wreck diving here in Ontario and the water temperatures generally require either a full 7mm. wetsuit or a drysuit, and visibility can be limited. However, divers who get certified on our wrecks generally come back to discover more and more of them. It is not often that we get a diver who was certified "down south" to come and join us on a local dive. By the way, did they have divers in mind when they named your country Finland?

Salty: no worries, I was not offended, just having a conversation :) You did not need to delete anything.
About the name Finland;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_country_name_etymologies#F
"From the Germanic/Swedish Land of the Finns. Originally, the Swedish term Finn referred to the Sami or Lapps. The word derives from a root Germanic root meaning "nomadic hunter and gatherer", related to the English verb "find". Latin Fennia. In modern Swedish "finna" is the verb for "to find".
Suomi (Finnish name), Soome (Estonian name), Sum' (Old Russian name): may derive the Baltic root zeme for "land": "zeme" ← "sheme" ← "shäme" → Häme ← "shaame" → Saami ← "Soomi" ← "Suomi"
An Fhionnlainn (Irish name) is derived from Finlandia though by coincidence Fionnlann also means Land of the fair in Irish. "
So I suppose they were not thinking of SCUBA, sadly.. :(

Well, since I havent posted anything for a long time (for a good reason though: havent taken any photos I could show to anyone :D ) I think a happy snorkeling photo from sunny Finland might be nice.

I dont think the ash cloud affects the airlines anymore. And it never was visible anyway, we had very warm week the week before here, 25degs C and above! (warmest place in the whole europe that week, go figure!)
