Their ugly critters but there is soemthing about them that I really like. I found this fellow while walking on a reef flat in the red sea at night. He was only in 6 inches of water, so the strobe was sticking out in the air. After getting up from taking the picture we found another one about three feet away, right next to where I had been laying:eek:
Anyone else got any stonefish photos they would like ot share?

Nice shot - but I think it is probably a scorpion fish rather than a stone fish.

They are "relatives", but stonefish is much more venomous;)

Actually there are 10 subfamilies with 388 species of scorppionfishes, but in common language many speaks about either lionfish, scorppionfish or stonefish.

So what is the difference? Except local vernacular. therefore location, like the difference between me and Mikael Jordan he is a basket ball player and I am not, but we are the same species! One isn't more poisonous by species but maybe by location. Easier to tell me how do you tell the difference?

So what i have experienced like UW-photographer with these species
1 Lion fish is mainly swimming, easier to get pic against blue surface and sun burst
http://sorvjuf.1g.fi/kuvat/Egypt+2006/Hp.jpg/full
2 Scorppion fish mainly more colourfull and you get better pics from them
http://sorvjuf.1g.fi/kuvat/Underwater+collection/Baby+scorppioni.jpg/full
3 Stonefish is more difficult to notice from its surroundings and dam difficult to get picture against blue surface and background.
http://sorvjuf.1g.fi/kuvat/Egypt+2006/84+p.jpg/full
This is not a big thing but it would be nice to have same specs when speaking our objects ( pic is off course tellin everything )

I think it is regional look at the following! Most people put Scorpionfish in the category closer to lionfish. I think this link is one of the best! http://www.starfish.ch/reef/scorpionfish.html (http://www.starfish.ch/reef/scorpionfish.html)

If you look at all the different photos it is still like putting a photo of me and Jordan next to each other big difference, but still the same species! Explain the difference except region of the world? If you look at the pictures on the link then some of the other fish here are not Stonefish either!?!? My only point then would be what is a true Stonefish? I am not sure once you start posting variations then where do you stop. I have found people looking at the same fish in the field will come back to the boat calling the same fish two or more different names. I would call a Devilfish a Stone or Scorpionfish as well. Again it is more about where you are in the world. In California we have Scalpin, Scorpion, and Stonefish except here they are all the same fish! Just depends on who saw it first. But I will not post any more "Stone fish on this thread" until I get back from Fiji where I will catch with my camera the same fish in Fijian waters and then it will be Stonefish, I guess? LOL

I made a hug assumption here! Jonathan posted a Devilfish here so I was under the impression we were including the entire family of Stone, Scorpion, and Devils! semantics are everything! My posts so far are all Caribbean Scorpionfish, same family wrong ocean. So I was not doing a good job is identifying sub-species and variations! So I am bad!

Mine is not a devilfish. It's a stonefish. Devilfish are different. So-called stonefish are the really venomous scorpions that can kill you. But keep in mind that common names vary. There are at least 3 species often referred to as Stonefish. There are dozens of species of scorpionfish, which includes the stonefish, devilfish, and various scorpionfish.
