Digital compacts enter to the level 12 MP

There are digital compact cameras jumping to 12 MP.

Canon have accordin my best info already 3 models for example G9, also RAW starts to be normal in them.

I personally cannot imagine why I would need a PS (sorry, I mean digital compact! :rolleyes: ) that has 12 MP, but then again, I'm not shooting fish with one.

There are lot of people how are shooting with them.
I think that very many are not printig their products att all,
but what they need is cropping-space and pixels for editing.

There are also comments that 12 MP is marketing trick, I dont know?

Well, I'm not sure it's a marketing trick. You are right, more pixels means more cropping space. At some point though, the sensor has more detail than the lens can actually deliver, and that point seems to be around 12 MP on small sensor cameras, from what I have read. What that means is that unless you make the sensor phyically larger in area, there is not much point in packing more than 12 MP on a small sensor.

There's no doubt that marketing plays a large part in the pixel war. The market for which digital compacts are aimed is not typically photographically sophisticated, and it's easy to perpetuate the notion that more pixels means better overall quality. When photographic novices ask me what kind of camera I use, their next question is almost always how many pixels does it have. It's a manufactured way to keep score. -Clay

I guess you are right. At some point though, even photographic nuts are going to wonder what on earth they need the file sizes that go with 12 MP cameras to take snapshots of the kids birthday party!
