I wrote the Lonely Planet D&S Guide to South Africa and Mozambique. Has anyone has a chance to use it while diving the western Indian Ocean? Any feedback appreciated.

Best,

Hey Tim,
Awesome, man! I haven't seen the book yet. I have a friend who has been to Mozambique many times and raves about it. Can you share your thoughts, maybe a few shots?

Mozambique or any South Africa diving isn't live aboard action. You have to endure surf entries in a big zodiac which is rough on equipment. And they come back after every dive, so three dives a day means three beach launches a day! Vis can be low and seas big. But the payoff is big mantas, sharks and whale sharks. Humpbacks in season. Even the fish seem bigger.

They don't have what you would call pretty reefs but the fish life can be great. Big cod, mobula, raggies. They are just starting to get the kind of diver who carries a camera and who isn't into a tent in the sand for a diving holiday. But the minor inconveniences are worth it once you get underwater.

The place where they see raggies off of Umkomass also has a couple of very nice shipwrecks that are great for photography.

In all, I recommend the experience and urge support on any form of conservation as the longliners and poachers are getting their share of the mantas, whale sharks and sharks. Mozambique is too third world to protect much.

Under New Shots on my website I have some SA and Moz images taken in 2004 (not that new I guess) but you get the idea.

Best,

TR

You have now 4 messages with same links...if you really want me to think positively about South Africa it is enough.
