My favorite. A male mating with a female and two other males biting the primary male, trying to remove him.

Sorvju-f, I like the sleeping turtle, I caught one like that with video in Tarpon Cavern on the wall at Halfmoon Key in Belize. It is cool to see them like that.

You are right very nice composition:D

Its bitty that overexposed points are very difficult to correct with editing programs...anyhow not with my skills.

Some day editing softwares are doing that also...so everybody dont throw away overexposed nice pics!

Thanks guys for the comments. The turtle orgy was the result of a long search for a mating pair and over 2 hours snorkeling with them (blowing off a dive) in order to be there at the right moment. I have my assistant Scott to thank for getting that shot. I was shooting HD for my film and he had the presence of mind to jump in and bring my SLR over for a few frames now and then between video shots. This shot is a perfect example of putting in the extra effort to "get the shot" and not just doing a dive and shoot what you see, which is admittedly what I usually do and what most sport divers have to do because it's all the dive operators really allow. (One of the things I love about shooting films is having my own boat so I can do whatever I want, even if it means spending a couple days hunting for a mating turtle pair and then spending several hours filming it.) Wait until you see the video sequence in the film of this (there are a couple shots in the trailer (http://www.secretsofthereef.com/)).

Jukka, I would definitely go with the "sleeping" story! If it's sleeping, it's an awesome shot!! If it's dead....well, kinda depressing!

Papa, I agree about exposure. Turtles are tough because they have very bright highlights that are SO easy to overexpose. I have ruined LOTS of turtle pics this way. Film was a little more forgiving with turtles than digital. When I shoot turtles now, I dial back the strobes about a stop under where I would normally to preserve the highlight detail, then dial it in with the raw file.

Jukka,
That turtle eating the coral is phenomenal! That is a wonderful example of a behavior shot that is marketable. Behavior shots are about 10 times more marketable than nice portraits (which is a bummer because I love a nice animal portrait, as I'm sure we all do). I don't have anything that good of a turtle eating.

Jukka: I agree with Jonathan. The close shot of the turtle's face in your original post was great, but the added behavior is really special. -Clay

Jonathan & Clay, thanks for the KUDOS ( a word I learned from this site )

Your feedback is valuable for the future. I think its easier to take portrait than get behavior to file, but sound like its worth of!

I just kept this one just like one pic until heard your comments!

That's pretty weird, alright, Jukka! I have some shots somewhere of turtles in the Bahamas (Hesparus wreck, I think) sleeping at night and almost totally covered by those big, green remoras. Never did anything with them because they looked too weird. -Clay

Of course, I was swimming along with a macro lens on when we come upon a large turtle just laying on a ledge on the reef. I thought, "Oh well, what the heck" and shot a couple of shots. Nothing great, just a cool turtle head shot that actually looks to be in focus. (Wonder how that happened?)

This was shot in North Sulawesi in Sept of 07.

You were lucky that you had macro...with wide angle you would have picture that has been taken already 10 zillion time;)

Great pic Redkane, love the way he is looking straight into the lens, then have amazing eyes which seem to look through you. Here are two (also with my macro) from my recent Malaysia trip but not with such good eye line.

I just got back from the Digital Shootout in Bonaire (last night) and here is one I just happen to have handy. I have had no time to plow through all the images yet. This fellow was tearing into the sponge with rough results. Why do they tell us not to touch the reef??? LOL!

Jukka, I got bitten once by a green turtle while diving in Indonesia Seaworld. I felt the bite was like a pinch with a little bit of hard teeth inside.
