This question is more like "how the business been done".
Sony gave the possibility to play BD disks in their Playstation 3 console. You can get Playstation and BD-player in one shot...also price wise. How stupid...if you at the same time trying to sell BD-player to replace DVD-players.
Truth is that, when you create possibility to get better quality to your screen...some day everybody have that or the system which have same or better quality.
I myself have seen the difference...my opinion is that BD is future and I am not even trying to do something else than HD-quality. To get HD to disks needs more memory space...now BD is 25GBit to 200 Gbit. Something new can come, but at the moment BD is only real alternative.
I understand that to sell to mass media HD-quality is not so attractive...only couple of channels are able/willing to send it out. But I know also from the business that in competition you have to follow the trend.

The problem is that Sony has made the licensing so expensive that small producers can't afford to have a BD mass produced.
