26.12.2004 this area also was hit by tsunami. Some sources are saying that 300 000 people died…mainly in Indonesian northern part Aceh. In Krabi area was also some memory plates which were indicating this enormous power of nature:

Long tail boats are local construction including well balanced car engine with long tail end of which you can fin a propeller. In bad places you can lift propeller out of water and you can change the direction by turning whole engine system:

For sure it is also worth of taking the underwater look. There are huge amount of dive centers to choose. I did totally 13 dives and used 5 days for diving. I had all the camera gears with me.
The first diving day to Phi Phi Island was disappointment due to very low visibility. My wish was to see whale shark and leopard shark which are spotted there rather often…but not my lucky dives.
Most famous diving area there is Similan Islands. I did one day trip there, but as there are many dive sites that would be the place to visit with 3-4 days live board. Underwater you will see there beautiful rock formations, tunnels, canyons and great variety of UW-creatures.
There was also one wreck name King Cruiser to dive. Current can be very strong there and visibility can be poor. During my dive there visibility was OK. I was running video there so no pictures, but maybe some day I got some video material ready from there ( Final cut pro study is going on )
I did also 2 fast boat trip to sites which are more far and of coarse when you go more far the visibility is better. I used two days to visit sites name Hing Daeng, Hing Muang and Koh Ha. I can recommend those ones. 2 first ones were corals and walls and last one was caves where you can surface inside the cave to air space and see the cave expanding 20 meters up. Some light was coming trough the tunnel to see the beautiful rock formations there.
Price of diving there was not cheap…13 dives and 5 days were costing EUR 540 ( USD 750 ). There were extra expences from Similan trip due to very long ride by bus and boat included.
One thing UW will stay in my mind is these purple anemones…some sites were covered with hundreds of them.
Some pics of these anemones:

I had family trip to Thailand last December. Here is short report from the trip with some pictures.
Thailand is great place to visit specially to diver, who wants to do couple of dives and use also time with the family to have top side adventures.
We stayed 2 week in the place which is near Phuket called Krabi, Aonang. When travelling with family I normally choose little bit higher standard hotel. Our choice was Ayodhaya hotel, which had problems to open due to local religious leaders thought that it looks like a temple and “only gods can live in temple". Anyhow we lived there for two weeks ( it was still partly closed )
Some pictures from the hotel:

Jukka,
P.S. Get ready for cold water next month....:D
Thanks Doug, Andrew, Scubagirl and Jonathan.
Jonathan my mind is already in Antarctica.
Actually when you have visited several diving places it start to be difficult to get some new things/creatures/views to your pictures/videos...Antarctica will offer this to me...that's why with all difficulties...time to travel 5 days to destination...huge mount of excess paggage...cold..price...I am just counting the days to get there.
