Was there anyone on the trip without either a still or video camera??
Normally I'm the only one on these trips without a camera, but this time I took along my wife’s subcompact Canon and housing. I only carried it on half the dives. The dolphin photos came from an amazing 20 minute swim with a huge pod during the lunch interval. The dolphiin photos aren't of high quality, but they give a sense of what it was like.
Jukka, yes that is the only good picture I got of the cormorant, they move too fast.

Jukka, All,
Great slideshow Jukka. You know some of my devices have a very similar little round button, but my slideshows do not do the same effect !
An old cardiologist teacher of mine, when asked what is the "best stethoscope" in the world replied "it is not the stethoscope that goes in the ears, but it is what is between the ears that counts".
Sounds a lot like a Nikon/Canon/MegaPixel discussion to me ! BUT, given the exact same stethoscope, that teacher could hear nuances of sound in a chest that escaped even the musicians amongst us.
So, Jukka, keep pressing that little 6mm round button ! The rest of us (eh, I'll leave Jonathan out for now) will keep aspiring to learn how to "hear".

Maybe my joke was not thought to the end. We all have learning curve going on with different kind of things. I have placed my heart and soul to find these UW nuances and capture them to picture and video and absolutely I have the learning curve existing also.
Carl I promise that I will continue to learn "hearing" ( even I am half deft ) by pushing this 6 mmm round button again and again and again and what I hear after that I am ready to share with everybody.

So, using that theory, if I show everyone NOTHING, no pictures at all, then, I AM the world's best photographer ?
I have gone through all my video and have the clips captured. NOW is the hard part. Figuring out what to use, how to organize it, etc.
Yes, Jonathan, I do have a story to tell, so I think I know what I want to do with the video.
You know with video, I always thought it best to show everyone very little. I was a good videographer ! No I am not so good !

Carl...this is just why I tought my joke was not taught to end. You wrote beutifully how learning of "hearing" developes. By my joke I am underestimating people who are starting this development and that way might "kill" some coming excellent UW photographers. This is one of the reasons the internet is cool. Back in the day, if you shot video, it was hard to share. Once you edited something....you had to make lousy looking VHS tapes and mail them to friends. They often didn't watch them because it was a pain. Now you can put your video on the internet and people all over the world can see it with a click!
Carl, may I suggest that you consider making a 5 minute video and putting it on YouTube. If it's good enough, you could consider submitting it to the Dive Film (http://divefilm.com/) website.

Yukka,
Following our conversation on Skype, (i am always amazed to be able to talk to you in Finland while in office in Canada) you asked me to be more critical. Here a comment: The music sounds like it is coming from an ancient and heavily scratched vinyl record.
You should remove the audio track from the UW footage(or at least lower the level to almost zero) when adding music or adding a voice over. The audio we get with our housings is rarely good and more often unusable because of the frying sounds the hydrophone picks up. This way the soundtrack will sound much better and cleaner. If you want to let the viewers hear what we hear while diving, here a trick I use often to convey the feeling of being underwater:
Try to record your breathing sounds underwater for a minute or two in a very calm area (no wave, no current, alone, no boat above or close by with your housing sitting on a tripod or a piece of dead reef. Push the record button and relax without moving or touching anything, just breathe normally. You will get a clean soundtrack of the air going in and out of the reg with the bubble sounds. Capture the clip, keep only the audio and clean it with Soundtrack (the audio software included with Final Cut studio) and you will have an excellent and clean soundtrack to be used and used again as a sound background for all your UW sequences, giving the audience the feeling of breathing with you while watching your great images. Lower the sound level of the berathing while the music play or when there is voice and raise the level when there no music or voice over.

I will do this breathing soundtrack next time I am diving in suitable place.
This actually makes a good question. where we actually are needing microfones underwater in our housings. I have often thought that it gives sort of realism to story. But if you can do the same thing cleaner that way it is a perfect solution.
Are you keeping your microfone on during dives and what are the main reasons?

I usually get rid of the actual soundtrack or keep the level very low, cleaning the crack and pop. The hydrophone are sometimes usefull when you record sounds of the ocean like the grunt of goliath groupers, songs of dolphins and whale or even more, the sounds, comments and noise I make or Jonathan makes. You probably heard him hum, talk or yell underwater. He is the noisiest creature underwater. When the soundtrack is clean, I use it. It is good to give realism and in some case it had a lot: when a shark bumps you or hit the housing, it will give the sequence a great support.
You should also ajust the sensivity of the hydrophone. When set to high, you capture more noise than sounds.

Also fish falling in love to it's own picture in dome...unfortunately the love is one sided.

Hey Jukka,
This has to be your best yet.
There is a saying in videography: " the audience doesn't want to hear it, they want to SEE it". This means you have to let the image tell the story not the narration. The words are usefull to complement the images. When the images are strong, words are useless.
Man! You have shot many great sequences to the point that I am getting jealous. WOW.
The soundtrack is great. Clean music, no hiss and pop from the hydrophone, great sequences, nice, clean and basic editing. What else do you want. A voice over would have been unnecessary.
What did you wanted to show us? The fantastic abundance and diversity of fish life we encountered in the Galapagos? Isn't it? That is what this video is all about. Two thumbs up!
I just watched your first video posting (about the Pharos lighthouse). You have come a long way my friend. Great work!

They will also be awarding 14 permits for live-aboards. Currently, only 6 boats have that permit and I believe most of those are through Jan. 2010. Though it was to have been put in place before, it is possible that with new 2010 permits for live-aboards, no land visits will be permitted. Seems tur navegable permits are for diving or land visits and never the twain shall meet...in theory. Strong rumors about limiting Wolf/Darwin time to 2 days, but that's rumor at this point.
http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/south-america/306241-night-dives-galapagos-banned.html
have been reading in the forum about the issue of night diving “banned” or not allowed in the Galapagos Islands and it is necessary that some points have to be clarified.
The whole idea began as one divemaster that was tired of doing night dives decided to gossip about this a few years ago, this person in those days was involved also in a survey and coordinating activities with the Park Service, then the gossip tactic worked, and suddenly the word was out:”…..no night dives..”.
May be a good thing we got the trip in when we did!

Hi Ralph,
It's not when we did it it rather than when Jonathan and I planned it and Jonathan made the reservation for all of us. This was in 2006! Since the Park and Agressor agreed on our schedule, we had a grandfather clause protecting us. They don't allow 12 days trips in the Galapagos since 2007.

As I recall, they still allowed night diving when you planned the trip, but that didn't help us. From what I hear the Park Service can enforce any rules they choose, whenever they choose.

I have been away for a week and just watched all this stuff. WOW man! You got talent! Are you going to make a DVD of this trip when all your segments are done?

Jukka,
For a microphone, pick up an inexpensive condenser mic and a pre-amp to run it.
This Nady (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006N14M4) is an outstanding narration mic for under $100. Don't forget a pop filter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/228555-REG/Shure_PS_6_PS_6_Microphone_Pop.html) to keep from getting plosives on the P's and B's.
I run it through an inexpensive tube pre-amp (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-MIC200-Tube-Ultra-Gain-Preamp?sku=182491) with phantom power to run the microphone.
I also run it through a compressor made by dbx in the '80s to smooth it out, but that is not necessary and can be done in software later if you like.
Then I capture it with a cheap USB capture (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-UCONTROL-UCA202-USBAudio-Interface?sku=702540&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=26048641) adapter using Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), a free audio editor for the Mac.
I save the files as .aif at 48kHz for direct import to Final Cut.

Hi Jonathan and well come back!
I have made to myself a challenge to get Blu-ray disk from all the segments. Lets see...I have not studied this new property in Final Cut to do it...and I have to fin suitable BD-burner for Mac-
Of coarse I have find solution to this narration question also.
Anyhow here are the two last segments from Galapagos:
GRANDE FINALE...( note my French accent :D )...GALAPAGOS WHALESHARKS:

Very good video David. The Mola mola is so unique. Music suits for the video very well because it was so relaxing.
