View Full Version : Vintage Nikonos shots

Since Nikonos has been around for virtually the entire history of scuba in America, I think it would be fun to show a few Nikonos images from years past. Here's a photo of my late, great, friend Evans Byrd--the most intrepid spearfisherman I've ever known. He's wearing one of the newfangled "tempered glass" masks, his steel 72 is secured to his plastic backpack, his "safety vest" is on (which was a rarity) but probably didn't have a working CO2 cartridge in place, and I think that's a Voit/Swimaster reg. Photo from 1977 beneath a South Timbalier oil rig off the Louisiana coast, Nikonos II/35mm, tiny Oceanic strobe (2000?), Kodak Ektachrome 160 film. -Clay

But it's the "skin tight" wetsuit that really makes it look vintage! ;)

The goosebumps on E. Byrd was a good indicator of where the thermocline was. I found a whole carousel of old rig diving pics. Lots of fun seeing my old buds in that old gear, but it made me wonder if the shots we're getting now will look as dated in 30 years! -Clay

Old thread, but the shot is so cool! The eyes are almost hypnotic!

I'm not old enough to have vintage stuff like that. I made my first underwater pictures in Massachusetts in 1990 with a Nikonos V.
